About Me

My name is Yan Carlos Ospina and I am passionate about the stock market. My passion for the stock market started when I was in high school. I had an economics teacher that introduced me to the market. I remember being bored in his class one day and suddenly he starts talking about investing in the stock market and he shows the class a chart comparing two people who started investing at different ages. One person was about 25 years old when he started investing and the other was around 40 when he started. The gains of the 25 year old largely outweighed the gains of the person who waited until later in life to start investing. I thought the difference was crazy and I knew immediately I wanted that for myself.
From that day on, I started doing more research about the market and asking people how much they knew about it. To my surprise, most people had either never heard of it, never understood it, or said it was a scam. I was so confused on why most people did not have this knowledge. I kept thinking, “this is so important for people to know about!”I have had many jobs over the years and I always found a way to start a conversation with my coworkers about the stock market. A few people were already investing or had a little bit of knowledge but the majority did not have any knowledge. I was able to educate a lot of people but this wasn’t always the case. A lot of people would get upset or become defensive when I spoke about how easy it was for them to build wealth. I could not understand this reaction because I felt as if I was doing them a favor. I would say, “if I don’t tell you this, no one else will tell you.” Eventually I learned that you can’t talk to just anyone about your plans and you definitely can’t help everyone learn a new skill. While this knowledge can definitely change lives, not everyone will accept it. Not everyone will understand, not everyone will listen, and not everyone will support you. Now, I still talk about the stock market whenever I get a chance but I am more cautious with who I approach about it.I remember my first investment. I can’t remember the year but I had purchased 18 shares of Nike (NKE) at $53 per share for a total investment of $954. Eventually, Nike (NKE) stock had risen to $80 per share and I needed the money so I sold my shares and received a profit of $486. Today, Nike (NKE) stock is worth $116.25 per share. If I never sold, I would have a profit of $1,138.50. This is when I realized the true potential of investing in the stock market.I took a long break from investing because I wanted to learn as much as I could about investing and using different strategies. There is a lot to learn about the stock market. I went down a rabbit hole and started reading articles, books, watching YouTube videos, and talking with whoever I could. There are many things you can do in the stock market, some of which include long term investing, swing trading, day trading, options trading, and futures trading. I tried almost everything. Trading involves frequent buying and selling of shares or contracts depending on what you are trading. You may buy and sell within the same day or week. It is very hard to be consistent with trading since you are trying to enter quickly and exit quickly as prices change. This should be left to more advanced and more sophisticated investors. Trading of any kind involves a lot more risk than long term investing. With high risk comes potentially higher returns but also potentially higher losses, a lesson which I learned quickly. It is better for most people to pick an index fund that tracks the S&P 500 and invest in it consistently over many years.Since most people do not understand how to invest in the stock market, I have made it one of my passions to educate whoever wishes to learn. Like I said before, it is a great choice to invest in a fund that tracks the S&P 500 for many years. VOO is a great S&P 500 fund. The returns have historically been about 10% per year over a long time horizon. Even small amounts every month will eventually add up and become larger amounts than you ever imagined. The S&P 500 is a collection of the top 500 countries in the United States. This fund includes companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon. For a single price, you can invest in all of these companies at once with VOO.
